Self-education is not new. People have educated themselves on a variety of things by the process of experimenting and executing. We were taught traditional ways to acquire new information and skills at school. Teaching yourself or self-education demonstrates how you actively decided to learn something without teachers or guidance.
Why is self-education the key to success? Let’s find out in this article.
Why Is Self-Education Important?
When we were younger, self-education might appear in how we adopt new hobbies and skills. Later in life, it presents how we try to obtain skills not taught at schools but vital to enhancing our living conditions, such as networking, investing, personal finance, etc.
Self-education provides us opportunities to acquire new skills and extends the horizon of our knowledge through learning, and we may find undiscovered gifted talents. Imagine yourself as a sword, and education is the wet stone to sharpen our edge; the more you dig into self-teaching, the better we will be: improved work ethics, deepened knowledge, and boosted efficiency.
Thus, skills gained via independent learning undoubtedly help enhance your cognitive function and logical and creative thinking. Learning more about critical thinking and problem solving through subjects such as math, physic, or even playing chess is helpful for a programmer to work more proficiently.
How To Educate Yourself Deliberately?
Find A Purpose
What drives you to start?
Ask yourself this question before pursuing anything. This intrinsic motivation directly determines your achievement.
For example, I learned to paint when I was younger because I wanted to become an artist. Then, I practiced watching Youtube and analyzing references in an antique artbook borrowed from my grandfather. In the end, I did become a freelancer and sold paintings to online customers.
A purpose gives you reason and helps you find a course of action to execute.
Have A Clear Plan And Attainable Goals
This action is a foundation to plan out precisely what steps consist of in your learning journey.
Before starting anything, you should write down the objective of the education you are undertaking. Learning without purpose is meaningless. By setting up your goal, you will discover which steps you must take to achieve the desired outcomes.
Applying criteria while outlining your plans can help you create realistic goals that boost your confidence and determination. Some two methods I have tried and found practical are:
- S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-based): suitable to create action-oriented goals or habits and help you manage your time.
- P.A.C.T (Purposeful, Actionable, Continuous, and Trackable): practical to draw out your long-term goal.
Don’t Pressure Yourself
Motivation is the fuel to maintain your learning progress. It will be hard to keep up with courses or books if you dislike them, so make sure you have done research before seriously commencing a new course or anything on your own.
However, pressuring yourself to master or learn something quickly might make you lose interest in the subject. I believe the gratification created while self-studying will decipher how long you pursue your education.
According to the European Online Journal of Natural and Social Sciences, “there is also a significant positive relationship between happiness and achievement of students.” Similar to conventional education, enjoyment matters. Being patient and giving yourself time to unwind when necessary is essential for a long-run learning journey!
At Project Sprouts, we realize that we can not solve all the problems of poverty in a situation like this. But we can seek to make a difference in the lives of needy children by giving them school supplies and encouraging them to continue their education; we can provide them with winter coats, boots, and blankets to help them stay warm during the cold winter months.
Project Sprouts would love to have you be a part of our community and help us help worthy children in North Vietnam. We cannot solve all the world’s problems, but we can do our part to help poor kids grow by giving school supplies, winter coats, boots, and other supplies.
